Program Notes

This diverse program connects two influential French composers, Debussy and Ravel, and American icons Gershwin and Copland. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major blends jazz and classical elements, while Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun showcases impressionistic textures. Copland’s Billy the Kid depicts lawlessness in the American frontier through folk-inspired melodies.

In the year marking the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death, the ESO plays his lyrical and powerful Symphony No. 5, a work in which many listeners hear despair beneath the glorious melodies. The work is paired with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme with cello soloist Christine Lamprea. Motor City Dance Mix.

Program

Program Notes

The ESO opens its 78th season with a highly varied program and the return of violin soloist Maya Anjali Buchanan. Buchanan, who wowed the ESO audience two years ago in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, will play Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto, a piece that reworks several themes from Korngold’s well-known film scores into a soaring composition. The program also includes Jessie Montgomery’s penetrating and stirring Soul Force, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Overture to King Stephen and is anchored by Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations.”
