Evanston Symphony Orchestra

Lawrence Eckerling, Music Director

The cello concerto of Antonín Dvořák is unsurpassed in the repertory of works for cello and orchestra and was the final composition of his stay in America; Arlen Hlusko debuts with the ESO in this passionate memorial to a lost love. Tragic love is also the hallmark of Tchaikovsky’s first masterwork, his Romeo and Juliet.

Program Notes

William Grant Still was a pioneering African-American composer, and his Festive Overture was named the winner of a 1944 overture competition sponsored by the Cincinnati Symphony. Our belated celebration of the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven features his iconic Ninth Symphony, whose final movement’s “Ode to Joy” sings of the brotherhood of mankind. The ESO will be joined by the North Shore Choral Society and four stellar vocal soloists in this sublime work.

Program Notes

Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is among his greatest works, and combines festive Russian folk tunes with a hidden program based upon Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and the struggle against fate. This symphony is fittingly preceded by the sunny 23rd piano concerto of Tchaikovsky’s favorite composer, Mozart, which features the ESO debut of rising star Hyejin Joo. Ludwig van Beethoven’s delayed birthday celebration continues with his overture to Egmont, which celebrates a Dutch patriotic hero.

Program Notes

Our 75th anniversary season reopens with a program of masterpieces from the Austro-German tradition. Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner were the two leading composers in the Germanic music world of the mid-to late-19th century: the program begins with one of Wagner’s greatest overtures and concludes with the monumental final symphony of Brahms. Another masterpiece occupies the central part of the concert: the ever-popular Mendelssohn violin concerto with the dazzling virtuoso Arnaud Sussmann.
