Scheherazade Highlights Opening of Evanston Symphony Orchestra Season

Evanston, IL — The Evanston Symphony Orchestra will open its 70th season – titled Platinum Playing- at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in Evanston conducted by Music Director Lawrence Eckerling  on Sunday October 25, 2014 at 2:30 PM. The program, titled Scheherazade and Other Tales, is comprised of three orchestral showpieces based upon literary sources and each includes the depiction of a storm.

The major work on the program is Rimsky-Korsakov’s ever-popular Scheherazade, based upon the 1001 Arabian Nights, and featuring concertmaster Julie Fischer in the prominent violin solos. The program opens with the Rossini’s Overture to William Tell, based on a play of Schiller, and continues with Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest, inspired by Shakespeare’s drama of the same name.

The other three concerts of the Platinum Playing season will include the ESO debuts of Evanston favorite Howard Levy in his Concerto for Diatonic Harmonica and Orchestra, as part of an all-American program, and of pianist Inna Faliks in an all-Beethoven concert. Cellist Wendy Warner and violinist Irina Muresanu close the season in the “Double” Concerto of Brahms, plus works of Dvorak.

Season subscriptions for the four concerts are available at $96 for adults, $80 for seniors (62 and over), $20 for full-time students and FREE for children 12 and under when accompanied by an adult.
