The Return of the ESO: Free Lakefront Summer Pops Concert

Orchestra members are eager to begin rehearsals in July for the August 29 concert of light classics, music from Broadway, and movie soundtracks, highlighted by the beloved "Theme from Schindler’s List" performed by ESO Concertmaster Julie Fischer, and concluding with the ever-popular 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky and Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."

Maestro Lawrence Eckerling will conduct the orchestra in its first performance since February 2020, after which the pandemic forced the balance of the season to be canceled. “Even though I’m excited about this concert, I’m just as excited about GETTING BACK…AT ALL!” said Maestro Eckerling. “A summer concert is a perfect vehicle for us to ‘be back.’ It’s a great thing! I like doing pops concerts, particularly ones that contain music by John Williams, and I NEVER get tired of the 1812 Overture.”

Concertmaster Julie Fischer says, “The 'Theme from Schindler’s List' is like an old friend. I played it with my high school orchestra when it first came out in 1993, and I have taught the piece many times since. It has become a familiar classic.”

The ESO is very grateful to Byline Bank and the City of Evanston Cultural Fund for their financial support of this concert.
