Rachmaninoff’s Piano Variations on Paganini’s Violin Caprice

Kate Liu will perform one of the most popular piano pieces of all time, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, at the Evanston Symphony’s October 26 concert at 2:30 in the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.Written in 1934, the piece is a set of 24 variations on Niccolo Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 for solo violin, which was published in 1819 and had also inspired Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms.

ESO to Perform Midwestern Premiere of Weinberg’s Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes

The Evanston Symphony will kick off its 2014-15 season performing the Midwestern premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes. The concert, featuring three 20th century Russian masterpieces, will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26 at Pick-Staiger Hall in Evanston. After decades of obscurity, Weinberg is increasingly being recognized as one of the outstanding composers of the second half of the twentieth century.

Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, one of the supreme virtuoso works for piano and orchestra, is paired with the Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes by the Russian/Polish Mieczyslaw Weinberg, composed just after World War II to honor his Moldavian-Jewish heritage. This will be the Midwest premiere of his vibrant work. Prokofiev meant for his Fifth Symphony to “glorify the human spirit,” and it reflects the optimism of future victory near the end of World War II.
