Songs of the Season

It wouldn’t be the holiday season without the sound of Christmas carols in the air. This year’s program will include traditional works like Ding Dong! Merrily on High and We Three Kings, as well as new spins on old favorites, with gospel versions of the Hallelujah Chorus and Silent Night. The latter was originally made famous by The Temptations, and this version for full orchestra and gospel choir was arranged by the Evanston Symphony’s Music Director, Lawrence Eckerling. New to the Evanston Symphony stage this year will be Rutter’s What Sweeter Music and Wilberg’s Carol to the King.

The talented musicians of the North Shore Choral Society will bring these songs to life, with Music Director Julia Davids featuring prominently as guest soprano soloist for selections from Handel’s Messiah. Also performing will be the young singers of the Evanston Children’s Choir, and the spirited Evanston Symphony Holiday Gospel Choir, bringing together singers from across the Chicagoland area. You can enjoy the sweet sounds of the Evanston Township High School Advanced Vocal Ensemble, both before the concert and during intermission, and even make your own joyful noise by joining in the sing-along, led by Mr. Claus himself.

Also featured on this year’s program is the Evanston Dance Ensemble, performing scenes from The Nutcracker and resurrecting everyone’s favorite tap dancing reindeer, and other festive holiday works such as Sleigh Ride, Little Bolero Boy, and Holiday Overture.
