ESO Teachers Go Virtual: Anne McTighe

Anne McTighe, a member of the second violins, is orchestra director for Highcrest Middle School and assistant director of string ensembles for Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras. Among her innovative adaptations to online teaching, Anne has her students working on virtual concerts to share with family and friends, including a special performance by the sixth graders at Highcrest to help introduce the fourth graders to the sounds and instruments of the orchestra.

Her youngest students at the CYSO took inspiration from the Google Doodle celebrating Johann Sebastian Bach, which encouraged musicians to compose a two-measure melody that the Doodle would then translate into the famous composer’s signature style. The students have also toured virtual music museums from around the world. Anne’s colleagues at the CYSO have contributed to the virtual music offerings as well; every Tuesday and Thursday, different members of the school’s community, from students to directors, have given live talks about various music-related topics. Anne herself had the opportunity to discuss Baroque bows and violin history.
